Mindful Eating: Food for Thought
We all know that eating is meant to be an enjoyable activity, one that not only provides nourishment and energy but also satisfaction and enjoyment. Our modern world has complicated our innate relationship with food. Our current ifestyles are to blame for our unhealthy relationships with food; we are offered endless quick-fix, unhealthy food choices, faced with hectic and stressful schedules, and are constantly inundated with cultural messages about body image, diet plans, what and how we should be eating.
Most of us have been conditioned to eat quickly and unceremoniously, rarely conscious of the food that we shovel into our mouths. Instead of making the experience a joyful, pleasurable and guilt-free one, our bad habits often end up making us feel guilty, disappointed, and unsatisfied, both physically and emotionally. While we may think that we are truly enjoying the food we eat and nourishing our bodies, we are in fact, eating more mindlessly than ever.
Mindful Eating just might be the most underrated health and wellness habit. It is one of the most powerful tools you can develop to improve your relationship with food and your body, as well as your mindset in regards to health and diet. Learning to eat mindfully puts you back in control of your eating experience, letting you enjoy your food more, and naturally eat less.
Take a moment to acknowledge how often you consume your food without being fully present in the moment. Have you ever paused before eating and asked yourself the following questions;
- How often am I aware of my internal and external cues when eating?
- Who and what process was involved in providing me with this meal?
- Have I chosen to eat a food that nourishes my body?
- In what ways does this food nourish my body? Mind? Spirit?
- How often do I notice the subtleties in flavour and texture of the food I eat?
- Why am I grateful for this food?
Mindful eating provides us with the tools necessary to cultivate more presence while eating, which in turn, inspires us to slow down, observe, eat with all our senses, and reflect on our eating habits and personal relationship to food.
