Ayurvedic Honey and Spice Flu Bomb

Cough, cold, congestion, nausea, upset stomach, sore throat? Is your go-to for dealing with flu symptoms usually over-the-counter medications? Perhaps you didn’t know that your kitchen can also be your pharmacy? This is what Ayurveda teaches us; that everyday pantry items and foods have the power to heal us when used properly.

This Ayurvedic honey and spice flu bomb made with turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, black pepper, and honey can help reduce fever, calm an upset stomach, soothe an achy throat, and more. Plus, this remedy is a breeze to whip up since you probably already have most of the ingredients in your pantry!

Here’s why this combo of spices and honey is so revered in Ayurveda:

Honey works as a demulcent to help soothe the inflamed mucus membranes of the upper respiratory tract and contains antioxidants that may help reduce oxidative stress and inflammation in the body. It also serves as a carrier for the spices.

Turmeric has analgesic (pain reliever) and antibacterial qualities. Curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, has potent anti-inflammatory effects, helping to combat inflammation in the body at the molecular level.

Cinnamon lends a sweeter taste to the remedy and is full of medicinal benefits. It is rich in antioxidants, regulates blood sugar levels. It has natural antimicrobial properties that help combat bacteria and fungi.

Ginger has a soothing effect on the gastrointestinal tract, which can help relieve discomfort associated with indigestion and other digestive issues. Its antiemetic effects make it valuable in preventing or reducing vomiting, soothing the stomach, and reducing nausea.

Black pepper may seem like an odd addition to the mix, it plays a substantial role. The addition of black pepper combined with turmeric increases the absorption of turmeric. Black pepper also aids in combatting respiratory conditions and rejuvenates the lungs.

Here’s the recipe for my Ayurvedic honey & spice flu bomb:

2 tbs. raw honey
1 tsp. ground turmeric
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. ground ginger (optional)
Pinch of ground black pepper

Combine all the ingredients in a small bowl. You can prepare and consume this flu bomb when needed or double or triple the recipe and store the rest in a small jar. Eat a teaspoonful throughout the day (every few hours or so), use it like a lozenge to soothe a scratchy throat, or mix it in with herbal tea or boiled water.
