Immunity-Boosting Spiced Milk

Published on Apr 11, 2022 By Lisa Codina

Everyone in the world is thinking about immunity at this moment. We have become accustomed to creating barriers between our bodies and the outside world — face masks, distance, layers of hand sanitizer. While these practices can help prevent catching an illness, ultimately, our real source of immunity lies within us.

In Ayurveda this is called ojas which is often translated as life force energy. It is the vital energy within us that governs our immunity, strength and happiness. You can think of ojas as your resilience and resistance to disease. It’s a super subtle substance that’s located throughout the body, described by the ancients as a sweet, whitish fluid and is the outcome of consuming a wholesome diet and maintaining optimal digestion.

According to Ayurveda, digestion and immunity are intimately connected. A healthy digestive system results in healthy ojas which manifests as:

Essentially, the more ojas we have, the better. It gives us energy, strength, and even resistance to disease. Although Ayurveda is an ancient healing system, it could not be more relevant in this modern moment. We can learn from this holistic system of healing to improve and maintain our health and immunity.

This immunity-boosting spiced milk is lightly sweetened, grounding and nourishing, and simple to prepare. It’s packed with spices that promote healthy digestion, such as ginger, turmeric, and cinnamon, and is naturally sweetened with dates. I prefer this drink warm however, it could also be consumed at room temperature as a cooling drink during the summer months.

*According to Ayurveda, cow’s milk is one of the most important foods to promote ojas. It is a highly nutritious food, an important source of animal protein for vegetarians, and a powerful source of immunity when properly prepared (warmed with spices). Although Ayurveda favours cow’s milk, I prepare this with a vegan option. My preference is unsweetened oat milk.

Spiced Milk Recipe

1 cup milk of choice
1 large Medjool date, pitted
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. ginger powder
1/2 tsp. turmeric powder
pinch of black pepper

  • Bring the milk and spices to a low boil in a small saucepan. (Alternatively, heat milk and the spices in the microwave for 2-3 minutes or until foamy and hot.)
  • Turn off the heat and add the pitted date. Blend with an immersion blender or a small food processor until smooth and creamy. Drink warm.

*TIPS: If you prefer a lightly spiced milk reduce the quantities and taste before adding more. Some delicious, immune-boosting add-ons: 1/2 tsp. of ghee and/or pinch of saffron.
